Keeping Your Baby Warm in the Car

There are times when you want or need to take your baby out for a ride. When you do, you need to keep her warm and comfortable. Remember that your baby's body does not have the ability to regulate her body temperature like you. That is why, if you notice, newborn babies are wrapped in a receiving blanket in hospital nursery.

Without protective clothing, riding in a car can be really cold. That is because the air-conditioning vents are just a few feet away from your baby, constantly blasting her with cool air. This cool air circulates in a limited space of a vehicle's passenger cabin. Furthermore, the temperature inside the car drops further if the weather outside is cold. So, here are a few tips so your baby remains comfortable in the vehicle.

Warm up the car for a few minutes before getting your baby in. Keep the car's temperature at 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning, your air-conditioning should be kept at low- to medium-cool setting. That is enough to keep your baby comfortable without being bundled up. Dress your baby appropriately if it is quite cold outside. Use undershirts and tops that are easy to take off. The outermost layer should preserve warmth. Try wool tops and bottoms since they are quite good in trapping warm air. Seventy percent of body heat is lost through the head. Letting your baby wear a hat, especially in cold weather, retains warmth and keeps her comfortable. In addition, cover the baby's hands, feet, and hands. Remember thought not to overdo it. If she feels uncomfortably hot, remove a layer of clothing.
