Wool Care

Your item will arrive lanolised and ready to wear, however it may need to be lanolised several more times to build up it's performance. After using the item turn it inside out and hang to air for roughly the same amount of time it was worn.

Normally any odour disappears when the item has aired. If not, or if it is starting to feel wet on the outside when being used then it needs to be washed and relanolised.

We recommend cleaning the item gently in tepid water with either olive soap or a specialist wool soap. Rinse away any remaining suds and then soak in a lanolin solution for the recommended time. When done you can either dry your item by rolling it in a towel to get out excess water or spinning it in your washing machine. Tumble drying or wringing is not recommended as there is a danger of felting or shrinking.

To Lanolise

The item needs lanolising when it starts to get damp on the outside whilst being worn or retains an odour after airing. It is possible to buy ready made lanolin solutions such as Imse Vimse wool cure but the most effective method I've found is to use solid lanolin.

I melt half a teaspoon of solid lanolin with a little bit of baby shampoo to emulsify it by pouring boiling water on it and mixing until the lanolin has melted to leave a milky coloured solution. I pour this into an old washing up bowl and add tepid water that is enough to cover the woollies. I turn the woollies inside out and allow to soak for 3-4 hours or overnight.

We suggest you only lanolise one item at a time until you are sure that no colour will come out and transfer onto another item. Some dye loss is normal and should reduce with repeated lanolisings
